DM’s Notes – 9/28/11

Sorry for the late post again. This week, the players ventured into the dark cave that was behind the canvas wall, they found it unnaturally dark, covered by a dense fog. They made their way through the cave until they came to a door, neither locked nor trapped, but the party nearly murdered Caedn when he decided to simply bash down the door. They ran into several kobolds on the other side, which quickly fell to the heroes’ weapons, when they found a side path going deeper. They followed this path to another door, this one of a heavy iron, with a deadbolt on the players’ side. A kobold that survived tried warning them not to go in or open the door, when the players tried killing him, the kobold and a few of his friends that had also been bypassed in death ran out of the cave. The players eventually made it into the room where they came face to face with a Bodak (Yes, I am the sort of DM that will happily send level one players up against a monster with a challenge rating of eight). If not for the interventions of the Avatar of Zim, most of them would have died. Serves them right for not listening to my warning and trying to do the second quest before finishing the first!

DM’s Notes – 9/21/11

This evening’s adventure was a fun one. The first thing we did was go back and bring Flip back into the group after he had missed several sessions. It was fun watching him spend a lot of time trying to figure out he had been turned into a growlithe. We decided he had run off from the group after being changed and then woke up again in a pile of hay in The Fool’s Honor’s stable. Flip woke up and tried to get out of the locked stables, though he was unsuccessful until he got frustrated and blew a hole in the door. He ran out to find the fight from the previous session just ending, when the rest of the group continually treated him like the dog they saw him as. Eventually everyone figured it all out.

The next step the players took was searching the bodies of the goblins they had just killed for a map. They had kept one goblin alive which they left out in the pouring rain and drowned, but they were able to find a very crude map, which really only pointed out two places: One could have been a smaller group of buildings to the northeast of the village – an old abandoned community that existed for the protection of the farmers there – the other end of which pointed to Vestsev; The other could be a ravine with caves in the cliff face to the southwest of the village. The players decided to investigate the ravine first. Once there, Caedn, Rhaolyn, and Zeph ended up falling into the fast-flowing river at the bottom of the ravine, after a lot of struggling, they eventually made it back to relatively dry land (its still pouring rain) and went into a cave, concealed behind a secret door that they found. The door was made of canvas. That was about it, there were no fights this week and nothing really new happened, just a DM having fun killing his players.

DM’s Notes – 9/17/11

Today was long as we started around three in the afternoon and ran until ten, but we have a new player who joined this week: Eris Brightblade, a human paladin in the service of Kord. Wielding a greatsword, he smites evil and seeks to do only that which is lawful and good. Eris joined the group, played by Arcas, in the town of Vestsev, where he had been helping for only a few hours before the rest of the group joined him there. The Aiel and the paladin hit it off very quickly. They were the only two to show up for the first few hours, before Rhaolyn -the cleric- showed up around seven.

Caedn and Eris chose to setup a trap for the goblins that were plaguing the village. First they gathered some supplies and Caedn got some healing from the bipolar old healer that smacked him with a broom when he simply entered her home. Caedn also bought some arrows from a stingy old man who knew his arrows were the best around and tried to charge the Aiel 20 gold for 20 arrows. The Aiel ended up trading away a masterwork shortbow they had picked up and did not need any longer, receiving the 20 masterwork arrows in return. Eris picked up a gallon of lamp oil, as well as Bacon (a live pig). Then the two set out to find the setting for their trap. They discovered a burnt out farm house that had been built mostly of stone with a pen nearby, where Caedn threw his depleted uranium signet ring at a tree, causing a reaction that ended with the tree’s bottom splintering and leaving a nice stake they could pound into the ground to tie the pig to. A Word From the DM

Well, I have separated the journals, notes, diaries, and whatnot from the rest of the site. Time for a bit more of a description on the whole growlithe thing, I think. As well as a couple other updates since the last post was written…

First off, all of the players are beginning to keep a log of what occurred in their views each session they are here for. Each of those logs are available under the Dungeons & Dragons tab on the site, I will be posting on the homepage when there are updates on these individual blogs. At the time of this post, there is nothing posted on any of the others as I am waiting for the players to move their posts. As stated, when they are moved, it will be posted on the homepage.

Secondly, in one of my more “fun” moves, I chose to change the gnome into a growlithe. I do have plans for implementing his monk class as well as the growlithe Pokemon abilities into the game, ways that will lead to my own ability to provide more… interesting challenges to the players. For other DMs out there that may be reading this, later I will post a list I made of the growlithe’s abilities that I have adapted to the game. Continue reading

DM’s Notes – 9/10/11

This week I bring a new bit of interesting information. Our rogue is keeping a diary to post some things from her point of view. I shall begin new pages for these notes, though this will likely be done tomorrow, for now, I simply wish to verify that yes, we did bring Pokemon into the game, I did turn the gnome into a growlithe, and this will stay. It was one of my random fits of strange fun and I am quite pleased with this. For now, my unsuspecting players are moving on to newer and greater things, which I shall enjoy the newer and greater monsters it brings immensely. The new player is a dwarven cleric by the name of Rhaolyn, he has plans to eventually become a Dwarven Defender, but for now, things will go more smoothly with the aid of an actual player healer.

** Please note: We do not claim to own, have created, or anything else regarding Growlithe or Pokemon in general. We are simply borrowing Nintendo’s creation for our personal amusement.

DM’s Notes – 9/3/11

This evening was rather short as Flip had to leave early for work and Zeph could not make it. So we were left with Flip and Caedn, with Flip playing Zeph’s character. The only thing that they accomplished was nearly killing themselves when they tried using a magic item, Caedn tried healing himself without a healer’s kit or Heal skill (the fact that he rolled a 6 did not help either…), and the group struggled against three ghouls… Its going to be a very long campaign at this rate… But that’s really all that happened, they retrieved a masterwork composite shortbow (+2 str) and a Scimitar +2 (don’t tell them, they don’t know yet! And they nearly blew themselves up with it when the rogue made a horrible roll on a Use Magic Device check. I know that normally there’s really no point in trying a Use Magic Device check on a weapon as it is the exact same as otherwise: stick them with the pointy end, cut them with the sharp side, or smash them with the heavier part, but them failing checks that are unneeded only serves to heighten the mystery. That’s it for this week, we have decided to move it to every other week, starting 9/17/11, see you then!

DM’s Notes – 8/27/11

We got a very late start tonight, as Zeph and Flip could not make it until later and none of our newer players have arrived yet (which means we will need someone to fill in via webcam or in person, email me if you would like more details!). But the group, this week containing the same as last week, Caedn, Zeph, and Flip, with several saves by Foxy. The players rescued a farmer and Flip was the only one that was nice or civil to him at all, they traveled down the road and got ambushed and slaughtered several times by a few goblins before their boss came, an ogre that nearly obliterated them (Heh, the DM rolls well). Zeph ended up begging for help from the Fleet Admiral, being granted a plus 2 to attack and damage during the fight with the ogre as well as 10 temp hp (considering they still got hammered by him, that was generous). We will be posting a video of Zeph’s prayer later this week or next week (as soon as we get the audio a bit more enhanced, tablets have horrible mics)! See you all next week, same time! Also, we have decided to change it to every other week to help with schedule conflicts.

DM’s Notes – 8/20/11

Tonight we sat down and created half of the group’s characters. We have Caedn of the Cache Valley Sept of the Tardaad Aiel, he is played by Jenn Hama N’Dore, this is a human (“subrace” of sorts being Aiel) Algae’d'siswai (I do not believe that is spelled right), a desert warrior fighting with spears. This character was actually taken from the Wheel of Time universe, Jenn did a very good job making a balanced class out of it, so I allowed it. He is a stealthy, fast, and deadly warrior. Next we had Zeph, played by Ninja Cupcake, an elven rogue out to steal as many shinies as possible. Though she really is not very wise… Lastly, for now, we have Flip… something, played by Nash, a gnome monk with a really long ridiculous name who can not swim to save his life and really needs to find other ways to get his point across…

Dungeons & Dragons

Ahh Dungeons and Dragons… A game of truly endless possibility. Whether you can obtain those possibilities is up to the dice. Many people believe D&D to be a bad game; however, it is no worse than any other game one could play. The game itself is simple: You have an all-powerful being that controls the game and creates interesting adventures for the players to crawl through and hope that the devious Dungeon Master (Or as I am referred to as in my group, the Death Master) does not decide to throw a nasty trap or monster your way. I have enjoyed it ever since my dad first introduced it to me, I may not be as good of a DM as he, but I shall get there someday, I hope. Despite everything, I have fun, and from the laughter, everyone else does too. This is also an announcement that once a week, I shall post a blog discussing the general contents and any points of note from our D&D games. Eventually I will also record them and upload them to YouTube or even the site itself for your viewing pleasure. They will be largely unedited, but they will be there. We may also eventually start a live stream of the game, we have one player who is with us via webcam and the rest are here in person. Check back soon!
